BackgroundRichard Romang has been passionate about the environment from a young age and always wanted to combine this with his artistic ability. He managed to achieve this ambition when, after several years working in finance, he enrolled for a degree course at Writtle College studying Landscape and Garden Design. At College he specialised in the Ecological approach to Design (on which he wrote his thesis) as well as Historic Landscape Restoration. After 3 years study he was awarded a first class BSc (Hons) degree as well as receiving the best design student award. Having already taken on some private work Richards first role after leaving College was as a spatial designer for a facilities consultancy where he put his CAD skills to good use. "This was valuable experience as it taught me how to get the most out of the space available". Richard then joined the landscape team for a large luxury development company where he worked as a Senior Landscape Designer. Here he took on a wide range of design projects from show gardens, parks and office schemes to urban spaces, play areas and tree lined avenues. Having gained valuable experience Richard set up his own Design practice in 2002 and became a full member of the Society of Garden Designers in 2005. Richard also teaches Garden Design at Writtle College and has worked on a consultancy basis for CADE (Centre for Arts and Design in the Environment). He enjoys working from his base in Blackmore, Essex where he combines his design work with family life. AwardsFirst Class BSc (Hons) in Landscape and Garden Design.
