A coastal garden

This garden, situated on a sloping site in Leigh on Sea had become overgrown and hard to manage. The clients, a young professional couple, had just completed the rejuvenation of their house and now wanted a garden to match. The brief was to produce a traditional style, intimate garden that could be used for relaxing and entertaining.

Richard decided to keep the garden in context with its coastal setting by using relevant materials such as oak sleepers, beach pebbles and shells. The new shed could be made to look like one of the local beach huts whilst raised beds could be used as seating and to aid drainage for cottage style planting. It was important to open up the site which had become overrun with ivy. Existing plants were cut back or removed to let in the light. A simple design based on a circular garden contained within raised beds was introduced to create an intimate open space surrounded by colourful planting. The garden can now be enjoyed when viewed from above on a decked terrace or from a corner seat whilst a mixture of colourful plants especially chosen for their coastal tolerance provides interest throughout the year.

"Thanks so much for the garden design - it is really wonderful. Russell and I have spent loads of time in the garden already & really can't wait till next Spring"

Thanks again

Nikki
