A courtyard gardenThe clients were a recently retired couple who were finding it harder to cope with the maintenance of their existing garden. One of the clients also had a long-term illness which needed consideration. The clients required a garden that would be functional, allowing them to sit out and enjoy the sites sunny aspect. They also wanted it to be low maintenance. The site contained a few problems. It was on a slope, the soil was compacted clay, there was an unsightly oil tank behind a large garage, access to the main garden was poor, the site was overlooked, there were no decent views from the conservatory and the bland brick wall of the garage dominated the garden. Richards solution was to create a courtyard garden on two levels, the main seating area being in the sunniest corner of the garden. A hardwood pergola created an element of height making the garden appear more spacious. The steps providing access to the garden were widened. An archway was created down the side of the garage whilst trellis panels were used to add interest to the wall, provide privacy and screen the oil tank. A strategically placed mirror opened up the space behind the garage making it appear light and airy. Materials were chosen to provide a contrast with the existing walls and buildings. A stone feature and architectural planting creates a stunning focal point that can be viewed from the house and different parts of the garden. Evergreen climbers will eventually cover the trelliswork whilst plants chosen for their purple and red colouration provide a pleasant contrast to the hard landscaping. The end result is a low maintenance garden that suits the clients needs exactly, a private area catches the sun throughout the day. The garden as a whole appears bright, open and a lot larger than before. "The garden is just great, i'm sure Brian would have approved"regards Sally
