A terraced gardenThis garden, located in Billericay was designed for a couple with two children. The garden was designed to allow for privacy, as it is overlooked by new houses. It was to be as spacious as possible and allow for regular entertaining. The site was relatively small, had a steep cross fall and was going to become smaller due to the building of an extension to the house. The clients liked the arts and crafts style which became the key to the choice of materials and became Richard?s inspiration for the design. Richard identified the main problems as being the steep sloping aspect and the fact that light needed to be allowed into the garden and the new extension. To overcome this Richard designed a terraced garden with the retaining walls being as low as possible near the house and using a strong diagonal line to open up the space as much as possible. This allowed for two seating areas linked by a circulatory path creating views and vistas from the various points of the garden. Focal features were placed at strategic points to create interest from within the house and garden. A pergola was used to provide a sense of privacy for the dining area whilst steps allowed access to different levels, and encourage the user to journey through the garden stopping to appreciate plants and views en route. Planting would eventually cascade down the terraced walls softening the hard edges whilst a water feature provides a focal point and a relaxing sound for a seating area that catches the morning sun.
"We really appreciate Richard's skill in seeing what was possible in what was just a garden with a slope. We really enjoy using the space created whilst the children love running round the path."
