A garden of movement

This garden, located in a small Essex village, was designed for a family of six. The design is being implemented in stages to allow for the age of the youngest child who still uses the garden for play.

The clients wanted a traditional approach to a garden that had a strong theme, that allowed for entertaining regularly but was practical and easy to maintain. The clients had links to classical dance and motor sport. Richard therefore used the concept of movement for the design. The design is based on a series of interlocking curved lines and strong diagonals which lead the eye on a continuous journey. Soft planting mixing grasses and perennials adds to the sense of movement but is as easy on the eye as classical dance. Reflective steel balls mirror the movement of clouds and the surrounding plants.
